Static VAR generator (SVG) is a dynamic VAR compensation device used in power system. It can improve power quality and reliability of power system by eliminating harmonics and compensating VAR power.
The working principle of SVG is based on the dynamic reactive power compensation equipment of large capacity static Converter, and takes VoltageSourced Converter (VSC) as the core. Through the reactor or transformer in parallel on the grid, SVG can quickly absorb or send out the required reactive power, to achieve the purpose of rapid dynamic adjustment of reactive power. This kind of equipment can not only track the impulse current to compensate the impulse load, but also track and compensate the harmonic current, so as to effectively reduce the influence of harmonics on the power system
The device structure of SVG includes the upper circuit breaker, isolation switch, connecting reactor (connecting transformer), starting cabinet, power cabinet, cooling air duct (water cooling equipment) and control screen. Among them, the main function of the reactor is to connect the SVG with the power grid, realize the energy buffer, and reduce the harmonic content of the output current of the SVG. The starting cabinet is mainly composed of current limiting resistor, bypass contactor, CT, debugging PT, which is used for starting and debugging SVG. The power cabinet is composed of multiple power units in series, each power unit includes DC capacitance, IGBT, absorbing capacitor, heat sink, drive board, energy taking power supply, etc. These components work together to realize the dynamic reactive power compensation function of SVG
In terms of application,SVG is widely used in distribution network for reactive power compensation and harmonic control of power system. Through the self-commutating bridge converter circuit through the reactor or directly parallel to the distribution network system, SVG can automatically and adaptively adjust the phase and amplitude of the output voltage on the AC side of the bridge circuit (voltage type reactive power compensation device), or directly control the current on the AC side of the SVG device (current type reactive power compensation device), so as to realize the dynamic compensation of reactive power and harmonic control of the distribution network3.
